Chicago Street Wise
New York Shelter
Street Wise is sold by individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty, providing them with an opportunity to earn income. It also contains articles, stories, and information relevant to issues affecting the homeless population, as well as general news and features. It serves as both a source of income and a platform for advocacy and awareness.
American Dream
In the commercial culture of America, when you're homeless or living in poverty, it can often feel like you're on the outside looking in, excluded from the glossy advertisements and consumer-driven lifestyle that the majority enjoy.
Addressing homelessness among veterans is an important social and policy challenge, as these individuals have made sacrifices for their country and should not have to face homelessness upon returning to civilian life.
Chicago
When people sleep in public, they are often subjected to public scrutiny, judgment, and even harassment. Passersby may make derogatory comments or engage in negative behaviors, compounding the sense of humiliation. Another challenge they face is being turned away from using a restroom or other basic facilities this can be emotionally devastating. It sends a clear message of exclusion and rejection, making individuals feel like outcasts.
Charlie, DC
Virginia, DC
When I met Viginia she had just had surgery and was released from the hospital to sleep on the streets of DC. I was introduced to Charlie by my project director Michael Stoops. Michael said that Charlie did not like going by the title “Homeless Man or panhandler”. He wanted to be known as an “unaffiliated applicant for private sector funding”. Charlie gave me a message to tell the public, he said, “Tell them we are dying out here and we want to live”. Sadly Charlie died on the streets of DC.
Roughly 35 million people, including adults and children, experience food insecurity in the United States. "In a land of plenty, stark disparities endure, serving as a stark reminder that amidst abundance, inequality prevails. This is a clarion call to shed light on the issue, to draw attention to the ongoing disparities that persist even in the midst of plenty."
Safe Haven
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. This equates to more than 10 million men and women annually.
Belonging often comes with responsibilities and a sense of purpose. This can motivate individuals to contribute to their communities, families, or organizations, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
"We must actively combat NIMBYism and ward off compassion fatigue by fostering understanding, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility. It's crucial to champion inclusivity and sustainable support systems that extend beyond our immediate surroundings, ensuring that we address social issues collectively and with unwavering compassion."
